Located near the confluence of La Gartempe and La Creuse, the village is located on a rocky outcropping. From this site, the medieval lords could control a strategic passage leading from the province of Poitiers to Touraine.
The history of the town has left traces in its architecture Also, the old castle keep, the Church of Notre-Dame and the Porte Bourbon are all rich witnesses of the medieval past that can be observed and visited today.
The town gained its reputation from its thermal springs and products made from them. It was at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century that the baths of La Roche-Posay gained their reputation for excellence. Large numbers of people then began to arrive, seeking these waters rich in selenium, silica and calcium to treat rheumatism and skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. Today, the heritage of the thermal baths forms an important complex (baths, hotels, spa, casino, racecourse, villas, etc.) and the city remains an important centre for thermal dermatology.
