Why not take a few days to walk your first kilometres on the Way of Saint James.
A historical route, the main road that descends from Saint Martin de Tours to Saint Jacques de Compostelle, follows the Vienne river before leaving it to head for Poitiers and the Ligugé abbey. Châtellerault, one of the towns along the trail is home to a 17th-century statue that the pilgrims came to visit, after having passed through the ramparts of the historical town.
Hiking or cycling, the Way of Saint James leads from the Gallo-Roman site to Vieux Poitiers at the confluence of the Vienne and Clain rivers and the 732 chessboard, the battle of Poitiers.
