The Abbey of the Étoile owes its name to its founder, Isambaut de l'Étoile, brother of Pierre l'Étoile, founder of the Abbey of Fontgombault. The hermitage became in 1124 a Benedictine community which joined the order of Citaux in 1145. Ruined by the 100 Years' War, the regime of commendation and the wars of religion, the abbey sold as state property, became an agricultural operation in 1792. The abbey had very great Abbots the best known of whom is Isaac de l'Étoile, a very great theologian.
